Stays in Athens

Cradle of Western civilization and one of the oldest cities in the world, Athens is the capital but also the largest city of Greece.Human presence has been found since the Neolithic, that is to say between -10,000 and -3000.

It would be around -800 that the first city would have been founded around the hill of the Acropolis (according to legend, by the hero Theseus). This city will dominate Greece during the 1st millennium BC.It was in the 5th century BC that it experienced its golden age, thanks to the fabulous strategist Pericles. Here is a very interesting little video on the history of Athens and Pericles:

Athens then became the cultural heart of the Mediterranean.A democratic city, it is the first republic in history.Bringing together ancient philosophers like Plato, Aristotle, and Socrates, it enjoyed an important intellectual life. From this period, many sites have been preserved, such as the Parthenon, the Agora (which notably includes the temple of Hephaestus), the Olympeion, the theater of Dionysus and the Panathenaic Stadium.

As you approach Cape Sounion, it rises like a steep cliff out of the sea. At Cape Sounion where you will visit the 5th century BC.Temple of Poseidon has the most beautiful panoramic views in the entire world (When the atmosphere is clear, you can see at least seven islands).

The precipice is a 197-foot drop to the sea. The land masses to the west stand out in the sharp profile: the island of Aegina backed by the Peloponnese mountains.

The beauty of the surviving Doric columns inspired many poets, including Lord Byron who engraved his name on one of the columns.

The interior of the church is decorated with superb mosaics, a beautiful and unique example of the classical idealism of the Middle Ages of Byzantine art.The crowded scenes of the mosaics tell scenes from the lives of Christ and the Virgin.
